I - Introduction
Kizomba means "festival" in kimbundou (the language of Angola spoken mainly in the regions of Lunanda and Bengo) Kizomba is both a style and a wonderful dance couple. It is not a Latin dance like salsa, bachata and tango which are each, the result of the interbreeding, the meeting of several rhythms, cultures and civilizations including African ones. Kizomba is both a dance style and a style of music. It's pure Angolan blood (African)! She is the "daughter" of the "Semba" (and not the "Samba" Brazilian ") .The" Brazilian Samba "itself comes from the" Semba "of African origin, Angolan.Kizomba is also called the "African Tango" because in kizomba, there are some classic steps of the tango such as walking, crusaders and potées. Kizomba is softened semba, slower, since the 1980s. Do not confuse the origin of kizomba with the "Zouk Antillais". Kizomba combines grace and dance technique with the rhythms of music. Nowadays, kizomba has become the sexiest, most sensual and romantic couple dance! The Kizomba couple dance is worthy of a romantic journey at the end of the sensuality setting alert basic instinct. Its growing global popularity is such that it eventually "steal" the star at "Zouk"! Even salsa and bachata have more and more worries to be made.
II - What is Kizomba ?
Kizomba is the result of evolution. The word refers to both a style of music and a style of dance. Kizomba is an Angolan word meaning "party" in Kimbundu, one of the most widely spoken languages in Angola within the Bantu ethnic group. The Angolan expression Kizombadas as it was used in the 1950s referred to a great celebration but did not establish, as it does now, a link with dance and music. The kimbundu, spoken by the ethnic group Ambundu (or Akwambundu), is one of the most spoken languages in Angola, mainly in the north-east of the country, and especially in the provinces of Luanda, Bengo and Malange. It belongs to the Bantu family of languages. The traditional dances named Semba, Kabetula, Kasukuta, Maringa, Caduque, Rebita, Cidralia, Dizanda were at the time predominant. Most of them are in the first instance carnival dances. You can discover many separately for the Carnaval da Victoria, which takes place in Luanda, capital of Angola. This carnival and Lobito carnival in Benguela Province have popularized these dances throughout the country and continue to promote Angolan culture.
Kizomba dance and music are not only practiced in Angola but also in other Portuguese-speaking countries (such as Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Equatorial Guinea) , São Tomé and Principe, East Timor, Brazil and the territory of Macao. As its popularity is also rising dramatically in the Western world, Kizomba is also found in Portugal, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, the United States, As well as in some Eastern European countries such as Poland, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Serbia.
The style of kizomba practiced in Europe, in the US and around the world, remains a little removed from the true style of Angolan origin, including Semba. This can be explained by the fact that as a large part (and not all) of the dancers and teachers outside Angola started with other dances (especially Latin dances), the teaching of kizomba in Europe, USA, Asia ... has been adapted and continues to be adapted. It is undeniable that Kizomba is conquering the whole world as romantic music that caresses the ear and super-sensual dance that captivates the soul.
.
III - His musical genre
Kizomba music has emerged as a more modern musical genre seasoned with a touch of sensuality and accompanied by a zest of African rhythms. It is characterized, unlike the Semba, by a slower pace and usually very romantic. Former Portuguese colony, Angola's main language is Portuguese. The majority of Kizomba songs are the same written in that language. At first, they were performed in Kimbundu and other national languages of Angola. Among the most famous singers of the Angolan Kizomba Bonga (Semba, traditional music), André Mingas (traditional music), Liceu Vieira Dias, Neide Van-Dúnem (Semba, traditional music), Don Kikas (Semba, Kizomba), Calo Pascoal (Kizomba), Heavy C. (Semba, Kizomba), Puto Portugues (Semba), Maya Cool (Kizomba, Semba), Matias Damasio (Kizomba, Semba), Rei Helder (Semba), and Irmãos Verdades (Kizomba).
IV - Its origin
What is now called Kizomba dance is in my opinion actually an evolution of the traditional Semba of Angola (Africa). What is certain, too, is that the craze for Kizomba music predates the birth of the Kizomba dance as we know it today. All Portuguese-speaking countries have impregnated Kizomba music with their own perfume.
Indeed, the Angolan people dance the 'Semba' since the fifties. This tradition remained unchanged, even when Kassav, a Guadeloupe group from the French Caribbean, introduced Zouk music in Angola during the 1980s. Angolans have simply interpreted their traditional 'Semba' on the rhythms of Zouk music. A variant named Brucha Brucha (men dancing with men) however developed parallel. This mix of Semba and other types of African dances was sometimes performed on Zouk music by Kassav.
During the '90s, the original Kizomba music became more and more popular and the Kizomba dance began to bear fruit to become the dance it is today. It all started with Angolan Semba dancers, who adapted their Semba dance steps to the rhythm and taste of Kizomba beats. Technically speaking, the dance Kizomba is in essence a 'Semba' danced on a slow Kizomba music, that's all !!!
V - What is the difference between Kizomba and Semba ?
The Angolan dancers of Semba love Kizomba music and have never stopped performing their 'Semba' to the rhythm of this music. At the very beginning, the Kizomba dance was actually a Semba performed at the slower pace of Kizomba music. The current difference comes from the fact that the dancers gradually developed Kizomba movements (continuous creation of new passes), which are explicitly suited to Kizomba music, but not to Semba music (faster).
It is important to note that in Angola there is no big difference between Kizomba dance and Semba dance, but between Kizomba music and Semba music. In Kizomba competitions in Angola, performances usually take place against a backdrop of Semba music. Many people still believe that Kizomba (musics) are only Semba danced to Kizomba music rhythms. Some even claim that the Kizomba trials should be called Semba contests simply.
VI - What is the difference between Kizomba and Zouk ?
There is a big difference between Kizomba "music" and Kizomba "dance". Kizomba or "dance from Angola" has NOT been influenced by Zouk. "The music" Kizomba has, however, undergone influences Zouk Guadeloupe and Martinique. If you hear that Kizomba has been influenced by 'zouk', keep in mind that this remark refers to the Kizomba "music" and not to the "dance" of the same name. The dance itself is Angolan.
VII - What is the difference between Kizomba and Urban Kiz ?
The Urban Kiz Dance (or Kizomba 2.0) is a couple dance derived from the Angolan Kizomba. However, the term "Urban kiz" was created in France from 2012. Then, this new style of Kizomba (French kizomba or kizomba french style) began to reach more audiences from 2014-2015 thanks to social networks, youtube and vimeo. The name Urban Kiz is adopted in 2015 in France.
The difference between Kizomba and Urban Kiz "at the musical level":
In Urban Kiz as in Kizomba, there are slow transitions, acceleration and breaks. However, musically, the Urban Kiz = fusion of Kizomba with Tarraxinha (which should not be confused with the Tarraxa) + Ghetto Zouk + styles Hip hop, Rap, Break dance.
Urban Kiz used some basic kizomba steps and adapted and modified them to dance to these musics.
And commercially, the music Urban Kiz is sold with the name kizomba Ghetto Zouk (music), born in 1998, is a mix of Coladeira (Cape Verde) with R-N-B (of Afro-American origin) and Zouk.
It is Victor Mendes who is the origin of this mixture.
However, Nelson FRESTAS (born in Holland and of Cape Verde origin) gave the name Guetto Zouk to this blend in 2015.
Before this creation, Nelson FRESTAS and many Cape Verdean artists made R-N-B tropicalized.
Since it is possible to dance Kizomba on Ghetto Zouk music, some people take it for the first time.
Indeed, many Angolan artists have created Kizomba music and also Ghetto Zouk music at the time of the skyrocketing dance Kizomba in the world.
Examples:
Angolan artists Anselmo Ralph, Nelson Freitas, Pedro C4, Mika Mendes have created Ghetto Zouk music, which is performed in Kizomba by many people.
The difference between Kizomba and Urban Kiz "in dance"
The Urban Kiz dance is characterized by its "robotic" energy, nevertheless very technical.
In Urban Kiz, unlike Kizomba, the couple of dancers keep more distance between them; there is usually no chest to chest connection as is the case with Kizomba.
In Urban Kiz, which is a dance on a line, the dancer's and the dancer's legs are straight (straight) with a lot of energy and body tension due to the HIP HOP, RAP and Break dance effect. There are also many feints of male and female legs. The change of direction is perpendicular and is sometimes abrupt. In the Kizomba, the legs are not always straight, in addition it is chest to chest and there is no tension, the dance is put.
The pivots and pirouettes that originally came from Kizomba (especially Semba), are more numerous in Urban Kiz than in Kizomba. They are executed with more dynamism in the Urban Kiz.
Kizomba : "the cultural anthem of Angola"
Indeed, Kizomba is considered by Angolans as their "Cultural Hymn", their "Cultural Heritage" even if it is these same Angolans who have massively broadcast this African dance around the world. Angolans are the "PROPHETS", the PIONEERS of the Kizomba dance born from their Semba. The Kizomba dance is 100% Angolan.
But the Kizomba music born in the 80s, is a mixture of Angolan semba of 1947, kompa of Haiti (1955) and Zouk of 1979-1980.
This reveals that all music including dance, are likely to "evolve or be changed" in another country of the planet to adapt to the demand of the present, in this place. Kizomba is a social dance that belongs to all peoples who love the spirit of sharing.
However, if a dance is perceived as the "cultural ethos" of a people, it must be taken into account.

URBAN KIZ
(OR KIZOMBA 2.0)
THE URBAN KIZ COUPLE DANCE CONCOCATED IN 2012 AND ADOPTED IN 2015 IN FRANCE = KIZOMBA + TARRAXA + GHETTO ZOUK + THE HIP HOP AND BREAK DANCE STYLES.
URBAN KIZ DANCE IS CHARACTERIZED BY ITS "ROBOTIC" ENERGY WITH A LOT OF TENSION IN THE EXECUTION.
THIS VOLTAGE COMES FROM HIP HOP AND BREAK DANCE STYLES.
BUT IT REMAINS A BEAUTIFUL TECHNICAL DANCE.
URBAN KIZ IS KIZOMBA "FRENCH STYLE". IT IS THEREFORE A DERIVATIVE OF THE KIZOMBA.
